There is much debate over what is the best cast iron grill on the market. That is because there are about as many different applications as there are manufacturers. Today's market sees different cast iron grills come as one of the following:
Indoor Grills: Indoor grills are normally reserved for people who are unable to have an "open flame" grill for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, people who live in apartment buildings that have restrictions against outdoor grills will resort to an indoor grill, or people who do not want to grill outdoors when the weather is not favorable will use their indoor grill.
And of course, there are many different kinds of indoor grills. There are electric grills which operate much like an outdoor grill except there is no flame, no charcoal/gas, no bricks, etc., but the heating element (a cast iron plate with elevated grids) sears the food just as an outdoor grill would.
There are cast iron grill pans which obtain their heat from a heating element such as a stove or oven. Within the body of the pan are elevated grids, like the indoor electric grill, and these grids sear the food just as any other grill might.
As well, there are specialty grills like the George Foreman grill which will sear food from two angles -- the top and the bottom.
Ultimately, the benefits to using an indoor grill over a traditional cooking surface is that the grill allows some of the food's non-desirable ingredients like unhealthy fats and oils to "roll" away from the food. There is much debate over whether the food still has that "grilled" taste to it the way foods prepared on an outdoor grill will.
Outdoor Grills: Outdoor grills are what many people consider to be a "true" grill. These grills are typically used outdoors for safety reasons as they involve an open flame, high pressure gas in the form of natural gas or propane (being the most common) and other types of gasses or energy (like an infrared grill).
The most common outdoor grill is quite possibly the popane gas grill, which is heated by use of propane gas. These days, many people people with the ability to run their gas grills on their home's natural gas will have a dedicated gas line installed (professionally of course) for their grill. This eliminates the instances of having to have a propane tank refilled at the most inopportune time (such was when company is over).
Other popular types of outdoor grills include the Hibachi, the kettle grill, and an entire family of portable grills such as those that many families will bring out on camping excursions and trips.
Cast Iron Grills -- What are They?
Ultimately, this website is dedicated to the cast iron grill because cast iron grills provide the best searing of all other grill materials. This searing, the spacing between the sear lines and temperature of the sear is so specific that it literally alters an individual's taste of the food.
With this in mind, cast iron grills are also known as cooking grids. However, since there are so many different types of grills out there, we use the term grill and grid interchangably to accommodate non-outdoor grill visitors to this site.
Types of Cast Iron Grills/Grids
There are different types of cast iron grills or grids. We look at the two most popular:
>> Porcelain-coated cast iron grills. These grills are extremely durable and typically come with enticing warranties. They are able to retain and absorb heat and sear food the best of any other cooking grill or grid. Typically low maintenance, porcelain-coated cast iron grills or grids are a favorite among outdoor grill fanatics.
>> Regular cast iron grills. Unlike a coated cast iron grill, these grills require greater maintenance (oiling, cleaning, etc.) but are a traditional option for true, die hard grillers. There is nothing wrong with non-coated grills, but they do require more care.
Deciding on a Grill
In many cases, people will be limited by where they live as to what type of grill they will purchase and/or use. Considerations such as climate, local bylaws/regulations and so on might dictate the type of grill that one can own and use.
