Indoor Grills

Not everyone is able to indulge in the quick and relatively maintenance-free enjoyment of owning an outdoor, gas/flame grill. For those individuals, this page is all about indoor grills and how they can replace (well, sort of) that outdoor grilling experience.

Probably the most dinstinguishing characteristic of an indoor grill is that it does not involve gas, a flame, or other highly flamable or combustible substances. In almost all cases, indoor grills are heated via electricity. But luckily for most, almost all indoor grills are cast iron grills, meaning that even the most uncertain and inexperienced griller in the world will probably luck out and purchase the best type of grill out there.

Owners of indoor grills either love them or hate them. The disadvantages mostly come down to matters of personal taste -- clean-up is required, they heat up slower than high-pressured gas outdoor grills, they do not have that "charcoal" taste that outdoor charcoal grills can give, they limit how items can be cooked since there is no flame and the same ventilation that outdoor grills enjoy obviously are not available to most indoor grills, etc.

Ultimately, however, the same basic food-eating experience can be had with indoor grills. As mentioned above, an indoor grill is almost always a cast iron grill. And as mentioned on the home page, cast iron grilling surfaces provide the best searing. It outranks stainless steel, regular steel, and all other materials, hands down.

This means that indoor grills can sear your food just as easily as an outdoor grill can... ableit at lower temperatures for the most part.

There are plenty of different indoor grill options for people these days. They include grill pans that can be heated over an element or in a stove; indoor grill units which are lying electric frying pans in that they plug into an electrical outlet and operate in much the same way as an outdoor grill minus the ash, flame and so on; specialty grills like the George Foreman grill that has multiple grilling surfaces; panini grills, which are very similar to specialty grills but have carved out a specific niche for themselves; and alternate grilling accessories and machines.

Depending on your grilling intentions, the best cast iron grill for indoor applications will often vary based on the food you are going to prepare. Meats are often best on an indoor grill unit or specialty unit like the George Foreman; vegetables are most often best cooked using an indoor unit; breads, pizzas, sandwiches and so on are often best in panini grills.
